Pet Bereavement Counseling
offered by Judith C. Stutts, PhD
As a pet bereavement counselor, Dr. Stutts has had many clients express concern that their pets did not know
how much they were loved nor how much they would be missed. As she thought about their concerns, this poem
seemed to write itself. Although she wrote it thinking about the pet's point of view, when she finished, she
realized that the poem is rather a two-way communication, and that is as it should be.

COMPANIONS
I wish that you could feel from me
The love that you have given.
I wish that you could know in your heart
The joy you have given to mine.
I wish that I could stay with you
And never have to leave.
I wish that I could hear your voice
Once more before I go.
I want you to know above all else
That you have always been
The BEST--
The Best Friend,
The Best Companion,
The Best Comfort,
The Best Teacher,
Quite simply,
The BEST
And so, please shed your tears at the loss we share,
While remembering all the while
That friendships last forever,
In the hearts of those who care.
Signed,
Your loving companion.
